Download the application for the Hugh N. Boyd Journalism Diversity Workshop. That application for the 2008 workshop will be updated later, but can be used in the meantime. In addition to the application, you will also need the following:

Required Essays

Essay 1: Tell us all about yourself! Let a 300-word typed, double-spaced autobiography reflect your personality and creativity. What is important to you in your life? What have you accomplished so far? What do you hope to do in the future? Why is journalism important to you?

Essay 2: Considering the ultimate goal of this workshop is to help the newspaper industry increase the number of minorities working as reporters and editors as a way of assuring a diversity of content in newspapers, provide your thoughts concerning that goal. What would you hope to gain from attending the workshop and what do you think you have to offer if you attend? (300-500 words)

Other Writing Samples

Please attach two (2) other samples of your writing to the application. If possible, include clippings from your school newspaper, yearbook, or other publications. If you are writing a sample for the application, choose a topic that is currently in the news and explain how it relates to young people today.

Required Recommendations

Two letters of recommendation are required. Please ask two people who know you well -- high school teachers, newspaper advisers, etc. -- for a letter of recommendation that describes your qualifications for this workshop. Each letter must include the person's name, title, home address and phone number.

Deadline

Completed applications must be sent in hard copy only and must be received by May 15, 2009. Please check to see that your packet is complete and send the packet with all materials to:
