About the Journalism Diversity WorkshopJournalism Diversity Workshop for High School Students Plans 31st Summer Program
The deadline for students to apply for the 2009 program is May 15. Click here for an application form, which can be viewed and printed out with Adobe Reader or similar graphics readers. The New Jersey Press Foundation has pledged a donation $4,000 to support the 2009 program. The workshop, which is located at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, is operated by the Chiger Williams Foundation, based in Jersey City, N.J. The Web site for the workshop (www.journalismdiversity.org) offers detailed information about the program and a copy of the newspaper produced by students. For more information, send an E-mail to journalismdiversity@gmail.com . The purpose of the workshop is to promote diversity in the content of New Jersey's newspapers by ultimately assuring that the proportion of newspaper reporters and editors working for newspapers is as diverse as the population of the state. That employment goal will contribute to assuring the public that the the content of the state's newspapers ... especially news, commentary and analysis... respectfully reflects the diversity of viewpoints and cultures of current and prospective newspaper readers. Newspapers throughout New Jersey are asked to continue their support of the workshop by providing grants, printing the laboratory newspaper, nominating students to attend the workshop and sending staff members to the workshop as speakers and instructors. Also, several newspapers will publish advertisements inviting students to apply for the workshop. The workshop is part of a national program sponsored by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, based in Princeton. It is one of more than two dozen similar workshops that operated in 2008. Sixteen high school students recruited from throughout New Jersey attended the 31st annual workshop in 2008, which ended with the publication of a tabloid newspaper written, edited and designed by the participants. The lab paper, Mosaic, is available on this Web site: www.journalismdiversity.org. The following newspapers and foundations provided grants and in-kind support for the 2008 workshop: Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, FirstEnergy Foundation, The Star-Ledger, Philadelphia Newspapers (The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News), Gannett Foundation (Asbury Park Press, Home News Tribune and Courier News), North Jersey Media Group (The Record, North Jersey Community Newspapers), The Press of Atlantic City, The Burlington County Times, The Times of Trenton, the Boyd Family (William Boyd, Glenwood Communications), and The Princeton Packet. The first Boyd workshop for high school students was operated in 1978 at Rider University. Earlier New Jersey workshops were operated at the Courier News in Plainfield and at Middlesex County Community College; both of those programs were funded by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund.
