Scholarship for NJ Newspaper Carriers

About the Isaac Roth Newspaper Carrier Scholarship

The Roth scholarship is valued at $2,000. One will be awarded in 2010 to a New Jersey youth or adult newspaper carrier or to the child of an adult carrier. The application deadline is May 14, 2010.

The competition is announced through the circulation directors at New Jersey Press Association member newspapers.

Application forms may be printed out from this website and mailed to the foundation along with supporting materials.

Newspapers may nominate as many candidates as they wish. However, only those applications that include a Route Performance Questionnaire will be considered complete. The newspaper's circulation director or a district manager must complete a Route Performance Questionnaire for each carrier or child of a carrier the newspaper nominates.

The scholarship is awarded from a trust fund established in 1926 by the estate of Isaac Roth, who was a newspaper carrier for the Newark Daily News (no longer in print). The trust fund was transferred to the New Jersey Press Foundation in 1983.

NJPF Awards Two Students Isaac Roth Newspaper Carrier Scholarships in 2008

Keith Obzut of East Brunswick and Kathryn Stoppiello of Brick were selected to receive college scholarships awarded by New Jersey Press Foundation's 2008 Isaac Roth Newspaper Carrier Scholarship Program.

Obzut, a youth carrier for Greater Media Newspapers based in Freehold, is a senior at St. Joseph High School. Stoppiello is daughter of Asbury Park Press carrier Janet Stoppiello. She is a senior at Brick Memorial High School.

Each student received a $2,000 scholarship from NJPF.

In addition to the two scholarship recipients, the foundation presented "Honor Student" certificates to two applicants who placed high in the 2008 competition.

The honored students are: Courtney Amber Johnson of Willingboro (nominated by The Burlington County Times, Willingboro) and Andrew M. McGlynn of Cranford (nominated by The Star-Ledger, Newark). Johnson attends Rutgers University and McGlynn attends Towson (Md.) University. Both are children of adult carriers for the two newspapers.

Judges for the competition were Frank Mastromarino, retired circulation director living in Fayetteville, N.C., and Norrell Nelson of the Los Angeles Daily News.
